Properties: Orthoceras are commonly found in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Fossils (from Latin fossus, literally ”having been dug up”) are the mineralized or otherwise preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms. In ancient times they were believed to be a gift from the stars and were revered by many cultures.
Orthoceras is the name of a species of straight shelled nautiloids, but it has become an unofficial common name for all species of straight shelled nautiloids. They are part of the mollusk phylum called cephalopods and these cephalopods are an ancient group of animals dating back to the Ordovician Period some 450 million years ago. The orthoceras fossils we have for sale are Devonian Period and are about 370 million years old. They come from Southern Morocco near Erfoud.
